Dental Prophylaxis

Clean teeth are one step to equal a healthier, happier pet. We perform dental prophylaxis routinely on dogs and cats, using ultrasonic instruments. Each dental consists of scaling and polishing the teeth, an oral exam, and an application of a fluoride treatment. In addition, as part of our standard for optimal patient care, all dentals include pre-anesthetic lab work, a pre-anesthetic exam, IV catheter placement, and cardiopulmonary monitoring. Patients are sent home with a home care kit, consisting of antibiotics and a finger-brush kit.

Oral disease is a common health problem affecting 75% of dogs and cats over the age of three. Left untreated, oral disease can lead to:

• Bad breath
• Pain
• Tooth decay or loss
• Metabolic disease (kidney and liver problems)

Good dental health improves your pet’s quality of life.

Common signs of oral disease

• Bad breath
• Tartar and Calculus (yellow-brown discoloration on tooth)
• Difficulty eating
• Loss of appetite
• Increased drooling
• Pawing at the mouth
• Loose or missing teeth
• Gingivitis (red, swollen, or bleeding gums)

A complete dental assessment includes an oral examination and radiographs. This is done under general anesthesia, and following assessment, ultrasonic scaling and polishing can be performed. Loose teeth are evaluated. In some cases, diseased teeth must be extracted, while in others, the teeth can be saved by prompt attention to decaying areas and composite application. In the event of fractured teeth or more complex dental work, a specialist may be consulted.
